Prevent Damage with Hair Sun Protection

June 30, 2009

Hair sun protection is frequently overlooked. If you are like most members of the population, you look forward to summer all year. However, it’s likely your hair does not. You may love the warm glow that your hair picks up in the summer, but even “natural” lightening from the sun is hard on your hair. Hair that starts out summer with natural, sunny highlights can easily end in stiff, straw-like, dried out disaster if you do not take proper steps to protect your hair while you are enjoying yourself at the pool or the beach.

Here are some proven methods for hair sun protection:

* Moisturize - Pool chemicals or ocean salt can both be very destructive to your hair. The most effective way to get good hair sun protection is to constantly moisturize. Like skin, hair needs a lot of moisture to resist damage. Use a leave-in conditioner or spray your hair with a weak combo of your regular conditioner and water each time you exit the pool or ocean.

* Keep an eye out for Octyl Methyoxycinnamate - In general, complicated chemicals are not what is best for your hair. But octyl methyoxycinnamate provides serious SPF power to hair products. Also, products that contain the antioxidant vitamins A, E and C will help defend your hair from free radicals. These are highly charged molecules that cause the cells that they come into contact with to deteriorate rapidly.

* Always Cover Up - Creating a physical barrier between the rays of the sun and your hair is the best way to get good hair sun protection. Tie a scarf over your hair for a quick, classic and protected look. This is particularly important between 10 AM and 3 PM when the sun is strongest.

* Do the Right “Do” - Putting hair up in a knot or pony tail can protect most of it from sun exposure. Pulling your hair back and working a dollop of regular sunscreen through it will protect it and give you a convenient, “beachy” look.

Avoid damaged locks by protecting your hair. Hair sun protection will help your hair survive your fun in the sun and make it to fall intact.
